ORANGUTANG AT THE SAN DIEGO ZOO by Esther Steffens

June 2025 - ORANGUTANG AT THE SAN DIEGO ZOO

About the Image(s)

I spent a month with family in Southern California over Christmas and well into January 2025. On January 3rd our two grown granddaughters took me and the New Jersey grandparents to the San Diego Zoo.
I often have a hard time at zoos but the San Diego Zoo is known for keeping their wild animals in natural habitats. Of course they don’t have the vastness of jungles etc. but as my granddaughter, Annika, pointed out, many of these animals have it better than in the wild and are well fed and cared for. For better or worse, a number of wild animals know nothing but a zoo or wildlife preserve.

Esther, I love your image of the orangutan, but unfortunately it doesn't belong in PTD. This could have been taken a lot of different places, like Borneo, etc. Without you identifying the San Diego Zoo, we have no sense of place. It would be a nice image for the Nature Division. I agree with you totally about zoos in general, but the SD Zoo is an exception. They do a wonderful job with the animals and provide a an environment as close to natural as possible.   Posted: 06/11/2025 13:09:25

Esther, I too love this image of the orangutan and agree that Nature or open is a better category for you to enter. And of all zoos, the San Diego Zoo is my favorite. As to this image, you have him perched just right in the image and he is sharp.
Nice image.

Thanks Michael and Shirley. I realize that my definition of travel and the official PSA definition are quite different. I often have images that are questioned. I do agree that the orangutan is more off than some. I have thought about joining a more general PSA group, but I feel like I know the people in this group and like being here! At this point, this is the only PSA group I belong to and I haven't submitted phots any further than our group, the Delaware Photographic Society monthly competitions. I did submit some images to the DPS Circuit. I note that people in this group are judges!

I do have another comment: I find a number of photos submitted here could be many places. I won't be specific here but will try to put this in my critique.
