Ginkakuji Temple by Judy Burr, APSA, MPSA

September 2022 - Ginkakuji Temple

About the Image(s)

I took this with my first digital camera an Olympus D4902/C9902 point and shoot. Of course the quality was not even close to today’s cameras. I used Gigapixel to enlarge the original image and then processed it in Elements and NIK. The data shows is 5.6mm, SS 1/125, aperture 2.8, ISO 100. I was on a tour in Japan and most of my images were taken on slide film which someday I may get scannedJ. I had to search the Internet to find the name of the temple.

This is a very beautiful shot. The feel of the green trees surrounding the temple with the rocks and water in the foreground is very pleasing. A sky with some blue and cloud detail might be nice, but also distracting.   Posted: 09/05/2022 23:30:59

Judy, when we compare what our old cameras can do compared with the new ones, it is amazing, but I think your image here is very pleasing and your composition great. Hard to believe it was scanned. The water at the bottom of the image brings the eye to the all important and beautiful temple framed by the wonderful pine trees. I like the touch of orange for contrast in the landscape. Nicely done.   Posted: 09/06/2022 13:46:11

Shirley, this was not scanned. It was taken with an early digital P&S camera. I used Gigapixel to enlarge it. New software is a big help for old pictures.   Posted: 09/10/2022 19:42:01

Hello Judy, official name of Kinkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto is
Rokuon-ji, which means Deer Garden Temple.

Thanks for the information. Most of my images from the trip are on slides and I searched temples in Kyoto and found the name I used. I sent some images to my nephew who lives in Japan, but he said his wife would be better able to help and I just didn't get around to checking with her.   Posted: 09/10/2022 19:44:50

I would not have known that this is is an older image. I find it to be lovely. Everything is right to my eye, except that a little color in the sky would have enhanced it a bit. I do think a very blue sky with clouds might be distracting as Stan suggests. I love the trees on either side that frame the temple. Nice job!   Posted: 09/12/2022 21:23:30

Very pleasing scene, and well framed. I'm surprised at how dark the wood and tiles of the temple are. It must be very old.   Posted: 09/16/2022 03:08:30

You made an excellent job of scanning the slide for this image Judy, I too like the dark colours of the wood on both the trees and temple. The culture of Japan is so evident in this top drawer PT submission.   Posted: 09/18/2022 16:15:59

David,

This is not scanned from a slide! I haven't gotten around to scanning or having my slides scanned. This was from a very early point and shoot digital camera. Most of my pictures from
Japan are on slides!   Posted: 09/18/2022 19:16:41
