Julie, Quincy Market is a goto place for all tourist and locals in Boston. Interesting mood right after the rain stoped. Yo do mention that you tried a complete B&W conversion, but decided for this partially colored version. Because of this, it would be scored low or perhaps just rejected in a PTD competition. The judges do not have the luxury of reading your explanation unfortunately. You did a good management of the exposure since the abundant illumination from the lamps is not overexposed. From the 1/10th sec exposure there is some hints of motion. The wet cobbles give character to the image.   Posted: 05/10/2021 06:55:09

While I like the composition, I think it could be improved if the top was cropped off. I find there's too much empty space and it draws my eye up and out of the frame. Shooting this after the rain stopped created an interesting mood, and I particularly like the texture and shadows in the street. I would have preferred the black and white or at most, just keep the green in the shrubbery. I think Isaac is correct in that manipulating the color is not permitted in PTD. Right Tom?   Posted: 05/10/2021 09:55:03

Julie, Issac is correct, partial coloring will be rejected in the PTD competition. However, it is very creative to leave the greens, typically people would change the lights to yellow.
I noticed that you used low speed, therefore there are some blurs in the middle women's face. I would focus on the people who are not moving, such as the left group, and crop to make the focus. What do you think?   Posted: 05/16/2021 22:43:54

Julie I agree with the majority of members group about this image. The image looks nice and sharp, but in my opinion it lacks of tonal range, which everything considering is the most important feature of a monochrome image. Also the image is a bit too dark, therefore hard to read properly. In may humble opinion conversions must be done with the right images, since in the conversion process we are going to loose many details. As far as the PTD goes, I do not know if the image as the minimal requirements to be accepted, but I'm believing that it will never get to the final stage of the judgement.   Posted: 05/17/2021 11:35:32

Agreed on the color that's left. It would be disqualified in a competition, but even as a PID image, I find the color distracting. It seems to me this image actually consists of two pictures. A radical approach (but you might not like it) would be to crop it as shown.   Posted: 05/20/2021 14:20:54

Tom- that's a great crop for this image. I didn't think of that.   Posted: 05/20/2021 14:30:18

Your love of monochrome certainly shows in this image, if it had been converted fully your full frame submission would suit PTD - as would Tom`s cropped version.   Posted: 05/26/2021 05:18:10
