Dragon Bridge by Dr. Isaac Vaisman, PPSA

September 2022 - Dragon Bridge

About the Image(s)

This image was created in the city of Da Nang (third largest city) in Vietnam on a cloudy and rainy day using a Nikon D850 with the Nikkor zoom lens 28-300 mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 28 mm and with these settings: ISO 500, f/8 and 1/500 sec.

The bridge is over the River Han, it is illuminated at night, and on Saturday and Sunday night at 9 PM, and for 10 minutes, the head will blow fire and then cooled with a steam of high-pressure water. The bridge is 666 meters long and 37.5 meters wide and has 6 lanes for traffic

Isaac, Although I've never been to Da Nang, I am all to familiar with this bridge. I had the privilege of watching a slide show all about this bridge last weekend given by my sister's boyfriend who was the architect for it.

As for your image, I find it busy, where the dragon is far away and the fountain on the left pulls my attention in that direction. The building on the right is distracting. I don't get a sense of scale in this photo. Perhaps setting your telephoto lens less of a wide angle would have eliminated the fountain and building thus allowing the bridge to be the main subject. My edit puts the focus on the bridge, but I don't find it particularly interesting.   Posted: 09/05/2022 17:12:49

Perhaps I should have labeled my image Dragons only ?   Posted: 09/06/2022 13:43:35

That fountain reminds me of the Merlion in Singapore! I tend to agree with Susan regarding her suggested crop - and concentrate on the dragon bridge. Did you go in close to the fountain for more images? this looks to be a fine location.   Posted: 09/06/2022 11:56:14

I would have called it "two dragons" but tried to make a stronger composition and a stronger connection between them. Perhaps it would have been possible to get much closer to the fountain and fill a lot of the sky and the water with that image. The composition is very unbalanced - a long, thin horizontal line far away and a vertical element barely protruding from the left edge. Clearly, Isaac had some problems getting far out to include more of the dragon, since another architectural element is also intruding distractedly.   Posted: 09/07/2022 13:55:05

We were on a day stop in a cruise. We were very far from the Dragon Bridge with no option to come closer.   Posted: 09/07/2022 20:52:10

What a cool bridge! I love bridges and I've got lots of bridge photographs. I would like to be able to see the dragon much better. I don't think the "stuff" (that's a technical term) on the left side adds anything and could be a separate image. Perhaps you could not get any closer, but this wonderful bridge deserves a starring role.   Posted: 09/07/2022 15:32:35

This is a very beautiful scene of Da Nang. I was there once and unfortunately went in the rainy season. The entire city was black and white. I believe Isaac was trying to catch the water fountain to add more interest to the bridge.   Posted: 09/08/2022 06:18:14

Ok now, I went back to Da Nang in the middle of August before we joined a group of photographers for the North of Vietnam Landscapes and people tour. We were there Saturday night, and from our hotel on the river bank but a little far from the bridge, we were able to go out to a terrace on the 29th floor and with a 24-200 mm lens @ 200mm we were able to get the fire coming out of the head of the Dragon, and then the cold water flush to cool it down. At this time, 9:00 PM all the tourist boats and people walking on the bridge comes to a still for 10 minutes. Images attached   Posted: 09/15/2022 12:37:17
