Gristmill in the Fall by John Larson, FPSA, MPSA2

April 2024 - Gristmill in the Fall

About the Image(s)

Why I took this image:

Carolyn and I drove to Nashville, TN for a four-day trip. Nashville is too far for us old folks to make a one-day trip so we chose to spend a day in West Virginia. We went to the Glade Creek Grist Mill because JR and Lisa Schnelzer had visited there and highly recommended it. I took some of the easily accessible shots but then decided I wanted to walk down around some of the jagged and slippery rocks and get a closer view. Carolyn was very nervous since I had just recovered from a rather serious bike injury. I finally got down where I wanted, only to find out that my battery on my DSLR was dead and I was not ready to make the trip back once again. So, to cut my losses I took out my trusty cell phone and shot this image. Not the one I wanted but better than getting nothing for the hike.

Glad you didn't get hurt, but this shot was worth the effort. I wouldn't have guessed it was cellphone - just shows how good they've gotten. Everything looks in excellent focus. The composition is excellent - love the perspective emphasizing the water, and the wonderful tree color all around that great mill offsets it perfectly. Great job!   Posted: 04/08/2024 00:42:48

Of course I was nervous! His hands were full with his camera gear and his tripod. He had just spent six weeks with his jaw wired shut due to his bike accident. I couldn't get there to help him get back so he had to maneuver those rocks with his feet alone. He's lucky he got back to safe footing without an accident. Nice photo, and this location is definitely worth a visit if you are in the western part of West Virginia. It's in Babcock State Park.   Posted: 04/08/2024 10:17:41

Superb composition. Many people will want to see slow shutter for the waterfall. I personally think this is good enough. The waterfall looks natural. Great Shot.   Posted: 04/08/2024 16:56:31

Wonderful capture! Love the colors of the leaves! You were there at the perfect time to record the colors. Composition is excellent! And the story of what you went through to get it is terrific. Great job!   Posted: 04/13/2024 21:01:59

John, as they say: vantage point, vantage point, vantage point (rather than location..) makes the difference.   Posted: 04/23/2024 10:06:52

Isaac, and as they say too: fall colors, fall colors. fall colors (and sun shining on them). Classic photo, doesn't get better. That's why people travel hundreds of miles for this shot. I think it's a bit over sharpened.   Posted: 04/24/2024 15:29:02
