Southern Negro Barber Shop by Laurie Bergner

July 2024 - Southern Negro Barber Shop

About the Image(s)

I recently took a civil rights tour, during which we spent a couple of days in Birmingham, site of the 1963 civil rights demonstrations. During some free time, I wandered into one of the remaining Negro barber shops and chatted with this barber and his customer. The barber, who calls himself "the Mayor of 4th Avenue" told me all about the civil rights demonstrations that happened right there when he was a kid. His customer loved hearing the stories too! The shop was wonderful, filled with civil rights paraphernalia from the '60's all the way until the present.

This is a nice image with nice colors and facial expressions. I think this image fits much better in the photojournalism category especially as a human interest image. It also seems a bit busy too me with all the stuff on the barber shop walls.   Posted: 07/21/2024 19:37:26

Your story is a very compelling human interest story but the paraphernalia on the background is hard to see, so the photo doesn't convey the story as well as your words do.   Posted: 07/21/2024 19:39:55
