May 2021 - San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice

About the Image(s)

Equipment Used: Nikon D300S Lens: 18-24mm
Camera Settings: Shutter: 1/60 sec, Aperture: f/8.0, ISO: 1000, 26mm
Lighting: natural light
Post-processing: Lightroom
Accessories: none

Background: This photo was taken from a ship in the Grand Canal of Venice Italy. The cruise ship was large and afforded an incredible view of the buildings along the way. I adjusted the exposure to bring out the definition in the clouds and increased the clarity in Lightroom.

I love it and knew it had to be Venice but could not place where. You are right that the ship gave you a good view of this building. I can't think of anything I would have changed. I had not heard that Italy was the topic for May.   Posted: 05/09/2021 10:12:40

Thanks so much for your comments. I had to laugh about Italy being the topic for May but there are so many photo-worthy places and buildings in Italy, they will get more than their share of attention.   Posted: 05/14/2021 13:27:38

Great viewpoint. Beautiful image. The sky (as it forms a large part of the image) is little washed out though .   Posted: 05/12/2021 09:22:56

Thanks for your comments. The sky is one thing I did try to fix but did not want to overdo it.   Posted: 05/14/2021 13:29:06

Phyllis, it's a great angle. Can only be done from a cruise ship. I would make some suggestions for improvements. The color temperature of the image is veery cool, resulting in a green cast. You could remedy this by opening the image in RAW and use the color temperature slider to warm, it up (see first image). To improve it further, you could use a color balance adjustment layer in Photoshop (you may be able to do this in LR but I use PS) to remove more of the greenish cast. In addition, I used Topaz Clarity (a plugin to PS) to increase the saturation a bit more.   Posted: 05/20/2021 14:57:24

I did not even realize the photo had a green cast, but now that I see your changes, I can see that. Thanks for telling me the steps that you used. It made such a good difference!   Posted: 05/20/2021 16:01:33

I missed this church when I was in Venice. Probably because I wasn't on a cruise ship. The plaza in front of the church looks like a chess board. I might have cropped a bit on the right, to the edge of the plaza. I think this is a good perspective and as I'm one of the last to comment I have no suggestions other than cropping that haven't been mentioned before. Italy forever! So much to photograph!   Posted: 05/21/2021 10:23:52

This is a good Photo Travel image because it has a characteristic feature of a land and it is well composed. The color change that Tom suggested is right on, even though I think the original has a bluish tint rather than green. The sky is double blah, but since this is PT it is what it is other than to minimize it where we can. I think this would make a fantastic PID image if you replaced the sky with one of your better ones.   Posted: 05/21/2021 15:28:24

To all PTD members - I have heard the Venetians are planning to stop cruise ships passing this location, so enjoy this fine viewpoint taken by Phyllis.   Posted: 05/26/2021 05:31:17
