Cycle Rickshawala in Kolkata, India by Pinaki Sarkar

May 2021 - Cycle Rickshawala in Kolkata, India

About the Image(s)

Technical:
F5,1/1400,ISO 100,28mm. Cropped, to make the image tighter.

Background:

This was shot on the Independence Day in India . i.e. August 15th.
I wanted to keep Gandhi's photo in the middle and the flag (Indian Tri colour).
I also wanted the people behind to keep the scene natural (rather than dramatization by completely isolating the foreground from the background):
Travel Street Photography.

You certainly met your goals and I like the composition. I wish you had opened up the shadows a little more and maybe increased the depth of field so the trees in the background would have been a little sharper. I don't know if you could have made the sky a little less drab but all in all, it tells a good story.   Posted: 05/09/2021 10:47:11

You were close enough to the bicycle that you had to cut the bike in half in order to include the flag. But the flag and Ghandi photo tell the story with this photo. It is difficult to tell that it is Independence Day except that there are the flags which indicate a celebration. I would like to see the wheels of the bicycle. Your aperture setting is low enough to blur out the background but it is still quite cluttered in the background. Good job with showing the cart with the customer. That is so interesting. Good exposure overall.   Posted: 05/14/2021 14:09:14

Your comment says you cropped the image to make it tighter. Was that mostly cropping on the left and the right? Or did you also crop it at the bottom? I think the wheels and the feet of the rickshawala are important.   Posted: 05/20/2021 15:03:55

Yes I cropped in the bottom as I did not think that wheels and feet for this image is not important.   Posted: 05/20/2021 15:43:16

If it were me, I would go back to the original image and try a different crop that shows at least the rest of the man's right foot. Perhaps you don't need the entire wheel to tell the story, but cutting off his foot would probably cause judges in a photo travel competition to mark this down. I would also try to brighten the image a bit. I do agree with you that the flag is important. I also like the background with the buildings, people, and the Gandhi poster. Overall you depicted a good cultural scene for photo travel.   Posted: 05/21/2021 10:58:14

This image does have the cultural elements to make it a good Photo Travel image. I feel that it may be a bit too busy for my liking. You have about five elements going on, the dilapidated buildings, the rider, the passenger, the Gandhi poster and the flag. I would have liked to see an image, from a different perspective, that concentrated on 2-3 of those.   Posted: 05/21/2021 15:56:51
