March 2025 - Friendship Pier
About the Image(s)
Friendship Maine is a fishing village in mid-coast Maine. It is famous not only for lobster fishing but also for boat building. The wooden boat Friendship Sloop, known along the Maine coast among sailors, is built there. This photo was taken off-season in April 2024, when the lobster traps were on the docks and the lobster boats were on dry land. The harbor was empty of boats. Editing involved Lightroom adjustments, cropping, Topaz AI Denoise and Sharpen.

The pier was photographed in off-season and, as a result, the lobster traps are stacked neatly. I would imagine an in-season photo would be quite different. Your composition showcases the stacks of lobster traps and the small building with a nice reflection in the water.Your focus is very sharp. Well done.   Posted: 03/09/2025 12:39:32
Thanks. I also like the yellow and blue of the lobster traps. Good complementary colors.   Posted: 03/23/2025 17:11:20
Yes, complimentary colors are a plus!   Posted: 03/24/2025 15:10:25
Good Well composed. Do we need to straighten the horizon? For this photo I would have preferred a slower shutter speed ( for better reflections) as it seems that the showing the reflections is also an intention of the photographer.   Posted: 03/16/2025 14:48:16
Thanks for your feedback. The horizon is treetops at different heights. I focused on straigtening the dock and the shed.   Posted: 03/23/2025 17:08:57
Pinaki brings up a good point about shutter speed affecting the reflections. I am not so sure. A slower shutter speed would smoothen out the reflections and make them fuzzier. The wobbly reflections are also photogenic. I find the composition very static with horizontals and verticals only. You might want to try to shoot a scene like this to shoot this from a different position to get diagonals into the composition. Colors are great   Posted: 03/18/2025 15:29:59
Thanks. I agree with you about the reflections. Thanks for your thoughts about incorporating diagonals. Next time I head to Maine I will look for them!   Posted: 03/23/2025 17:10:07
This is a nice typical Maine scene. Unfortunately it usually does not complete well with "high profile" more spectacular locations. I think at bit of cropping as shown would improve the composition and put more emphasis on the lobster shed.   Posted: 03/23/2025 17:42:48

Hi Carolyn - I agree that this might not do well because it is not spectacular, and also that it could use something like a different perspective to make it more interesting. But nonetheless, I like it very much. It's nicely balanced in terms of composition with the reflection and a little bit of sky at the top, and also nicely balanced with the yellow and blue. Some photos are just very nice even if they don't have the."wow" that makes them a winner for competitions.   Posted: 03/23/2025 17:51:12
