About the Image(s)
Traveling in China, you can see the old side by side with the new. Here are the old buildings in ancient Datong, an old capital of this area of China. You can see the new city just behind them.

I like how the old buildings of ancient Datong are well-lit. I really shows the contrast with the newer areas. It's well composed in my opinion and the style of the old buildings keeps your interest.   Posted: 12/11/2025 14:33:07
Lovely night shot of an iconic area. You might consider cropping it on the right.   Posted: 12/11/2025 16:05:58

blown highlights in the lit areas.
Balance highlights and shadows; enhance mood without over-saturation
Otherwise a good image.   Posted: 12/14/2025 17:29:03

I've put the highlights down and the shadows up as much as I can and this looks like about as far as I can go. If you have any suggestions for how to fix the blown out areas or what else you're thinking about the shadows balancing with the highlights, I'd appreciate it.

Actually, I use Lightroom all the time and I used it to tone down the highlights, but they only tone down so much.   Posted: 12/15/2025 12:12:28
I think the old and new are an interesting contrast. But the old sort of fades into the sky in its greyness. I'm not sure there is anything you can do about it. But to me the photo is more about the old than the new. I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season and Happy New Year!   Posted: 12/21/2025 19:13:18
Beautiful cityscape in China, with traditional architecture and a modern city in the background.
If you zoom in a little more with a slightly higher angle, you might be able to eliminate the trees.   Posted: 12/22/2025 18:41:44

Wish I could've taken this from higher up butI was taking this picture from a wall that surrounds the city so I really didn't have any options for a different perspective higher.   Posted: 12/22/2025 18:58:51
Laurie, to my understanding, you can fly a mini drone in China as long as you apply for a permit. You might want to look into it for your future trip. Normally, I bring my drone on photo trips as long as the sites we visit allow drones.   Posted: 12/22/2025 19:42:29
I'm sure that would be really cool. I don't have a drone and I've never tried to use one, but it does sound like it would be fun and I know it takes very cool pictures.   Posted: 12/22/2025 23:09:11
