Looking Down on the Hoover Dam by Carolyn Todd-Larson, PPSA, AFIAP

April 2026 - Looking Down on the Hoover Dam

About the Image(s)

In March 2025 John and I took a day tour of Hoover Dam from Las Vegas. On the way we stopped for a walk onto the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge that was completed in 2010 as part of the Hoover Dam Bypass project. It was a very windy day and we held on tightly to the railings as we gingerly got to a point where we could take photos of the dam. I kind of like this photo, wires and metal towers and all, because it shows the truth of what you see. What do you think? Would judges downgrade the photo due to the messiness of the view or would they appreciate its reality?

An evolved, experienced judge would not downgrade the image because of the power lines. I would see that the composition is very good with the curve of the lake and the road coming from the left background to the foreground, but I might miss a sliver of horizon to complete the composition.   Posted: 04/20/2026 18:21:52
