June 2026 - Mendenhall Glacier

About the Image(s)

Why I took this image:

As Carolyn mentioned in her writeup we just got back from a trip to Alaska. On the second day of the cruise we took an excursion into Juneau for a whale watch tour and later in the day went for a long walk in the rain. During the walk in the rain Carolyn stayed back and I went on with the group to get a closer look at the Mendenhall Glacier. As you can see it was quite rainy. There was also a display to give an idea of how much the glacier has shrunk over the years, but I was not able to get a good shot of it because of all the people around the area.

Camera Settings: Creation Date: 05/27/2026 Camera: Canon EOS D-30, Shutter

Speed: 1/350, Aperture f/11, ISO 200, Lens Unknown Canon Lens @ 33 mm

Post processing:, Normal LR adjustments. Detail extractor in Nik. Panorama stitching of several vertical images. Sharpening and denoise using Topaz Photo AI.

Dreary day. Did you alter the sky in any way? Perhaps the sharpening and denoising brought out those swirls in the sky.   Posted: 06/18/2026 14:26:42

It was raining. Other than using Nik Detail Extractor as I stated I did nothing else to the sky.   Posted: 06/18/2026 15:28:44

Execellent image . Great composition, the wide aspect ratio captures the full valley sweep, with mountains on both sides naturally framing the glacier in the middle distance. Great Work.   Posted: 06/18/2026 16:16:26

Nice view of the Mendenhall Glacier and the area surrounding it. I have been there - maybe 13 years ago - and I am surprised at how much smaller the glacier is now.

This image is interesting to me because I was at Mendenhall Glacier 34 years ago in 1992. Here is a snapshot I took then (before I became serious about photography). It's interesting to see how much the glacier has receded since that time. As for John's image, I remember the clouds being like that, quite stormy it was.   Posted: 06/18/2026 18:15:34

Nice image! I think I might have taken it a little higher so that there would be a little more space between the foliage in the foreground and the glacier.   Posted: 06/19/2026 15:56:59

We were standing on a forest trail with nothing but trees behind us. I hade nowhere else to go to achieve what you are suggesting.   Posted: 06/21/2026 13:17:46

Yup - it happens. You did well to get such a nice image, especially with the constraints.   Posted: 06/21/2026 15:17:57

This is an interesting image. I suggest converting it to black and white for an even more striking effect.   Posted: 06/22/2026 13:13:49
