White Out 2019 by Carolyn Todd-Larson, PPSA, AFIAP

September 2022 - White Out 2019

About the Image(s)

Equipment used: iPhone XR
Camera Settings: 1/60 sec, f/1.8, ISO 80 (auto settings on iPhone)
Lighting conditions: Nighttime, lots of white in scene plus bright lights
Post-processing: Brought into Photoshop, some basic Camera Raw adjustments plus Topaz AI sharpening and I cropped out some of the black sky

The American college football season is on my mind right now as we start the season. Each year Penn State University holds a game, usually against one of our biggest rivals, where everyone in the stadium is asked to wear white. Beaver Stadium is the fifth largest stadium in the world. It has a seating capacity of 107,000 but for the White Out the attendance is usually over 110,000 people (they count everyone on the sidelines and all the workers, photographers, etc). Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN calls the Penn State White Out the most intimidating atmosphere in all of college football.

I have had season tickets for Penn State football for many years. This photo was taken from my seats at the game. I took lots of photos with my Sony RX10 camera but this iPhone photo came out better for some reason. A lot of times the scoreboard showed up in my Sony photos as a blank white screen, which created a distraction.

Carolyn, this indeed is an impressive image of once a year event. From your vantage point you were able to include all four sides of the stadium full of expectators and framing the central green. The iPhone cameras are getting better by the day, I the one of the future iPhone 14 will have 48 megapixels and 8K video.   Posted: 09/06/2022 14:34:42

This is a great image. I can't believe you go to all the games but I'll have to show this to my daughter who lives in State College. I know she has been to many more games than I have. Enjoy the rest of the season.   Posted: 09/09/2022 11:02:04

Great wide shot from a good angle. Never heard of the White Out, must be awesome. I used to fly my glider from Tom Knauff's airport nearby, towing it in its trailer from my home near Philadelphia, and all I remember about the Penn stat4e football games is to avoid them because the roads are clogged for hours. I think the reason for seeing the screen black is that a short exposure may hit the screen just as it being refreshed.   Posted: 09/11/2022 13:27:27

Amazing shot. I have been to a Penn State Football Game but not one where everyone is wearing white. What an experience! You were able to capture such a wide angle with your iPhone. As Isaac mentioned, you were able to capture all four sides of the stadium. Good exposure and sharpness. Great job!   Posted: 09/11/2022 18:54:54

Amazing shot. I know the atmosphere as I have been to UMich football... different color though. Cell phones nowadays are superb cameras ...once they figure out the software versions of the lenses ...life would be lot easy for many of us who carry along heavy glasses in our travels.   Posted: 09/11/2022 20:42:19

A vibrant exiting image that portrays the sensation of attending a large sporting event. And yes, having detail in the scoreboard is the icing on the cake - so to speak.   Posted: 09/22/2022 16:14:42

Thanks for all your comments. I'm hopeful for a good season this year. Pinaki I'll be going to Michigan this year for the Penn State game, I agree it's a great atmosphere, I'm here at the PSA conference in Colorado Springs right now. Fun time. Isaac is here. Is anyone else?   Posted: 09/22/2022 22:24:04
