About the Image(s)

This picture was taken in a small fishing village off the coast of Nova Scotia. It is known for sunrise pictures of the lighthouse but I saw these lobster traps and thought them very picturesque. I took the photo twice, once with the houses in focus and the traps in the foreground blurred, and this one with the traps in focus and the background blurred. I think I like this one better, but it was a close contest.

I shot this handheld with a Nikon D7500 with my 18-140mm Nikkor lens. ISO200, f4, 1/250s. I also just noticed it was -0.7ev but that wasn’t intentional.

In general landscape photos are entirely sharp from front to back. Otherwise the photo is a of the lobster traps. Depends upon your intent.
If you wish everything in focus, I suggest focus bracketing the image - three frames ought to do it - front middle and back. You may even try combining the two images that you already have.
The darker image creates mood. If you get too dark you may clip some shadows. The in camera histogram gives a good idea of where the light falls. Perhaps try capturing as much light -data - as possible by using the entire range of your camera sensor. With this data you may adjust in post to achieve the desired look.
You have captured some beautiful morning light.   Posted: 07/09/2024 08:27:23

Lobster traps make an interesting subject, the red shed and the house adds to the scene. I would have used a tripod and ND filter, probably and 8-stop, to smooth out the water to get better reflections in the water and made the scene more interesting.   Posted: 07/17/2024 19:34:34

Hi Karen, Very nice light and water reflections. Maybe you could crop some of the sky and the building on the right. And then use the version where also the buildings are sharp. I agree that an ND filter smoothing the water would enhance this type of image.   Posted: 07/23/2024 15:31:32
