Hanging in the Air by Rizwan Choudhry

July 2024 - Hanging in the Air

About the Image(s)

ISO 64, f22, 1/25 sec shot at 24mm with a Nikon D850 and Tamron 24-70mm lens. Sustainival a Fort McMurray Annual summer fair. A towering swing ride in motion at sunset, the riders and chairs suspended in the mid-air. The blurred movement of the swings converys a sense of motion and the orange hue portrays energy.

The sense of motion and beautiful orange colors are very good.
The wide angle lens is giving a little bit of parallax to the image. You see the poles and trees pinch in a bit. You can correct a bit of this in post.
Often a vertical subject requires a vertical orientation of the final image. Did you happen to take a vertical orientation?
I would try a vertical shot with the camera lens perpendicular to the tower. This may require stepping back and cropping out the foreground in the final image. This methodology will help deal with distortions.
You may try to take multiple shots - sequential images - about 10 frames per second. Then you make pick the one that has all the passengers separated - not touching the tower.
I try not to shoot at high f stops because of diffraction. Rather I prefer the use of neutral density filters to help create the motion blur effect like here or in water. Here a 3 or 4 stop ND filter would allow a much lower f stop and perhaps bring even more colors into the sky.
I love the colored lights and background colors. The silhouette idea works well too.   Posted: 07/10/2024 10:27:32

Thank you so much for such a detailed analysis and thoughtful suggestions. I really appreciate your keen eye for photography and deep understanding of the craft. Looking forward to learning a lot from this group.
Unfortunately, I didn't take a vertical shot but the edit you sent me does look much better. I am still exploring the use of ND filters and getting used to carrying the tripod with me, but I see your point here and I agree that lower f-stop will help bring more color in the sky. Thank you again for such encouraging words. I am posting your edit here, which looks much improved.   Posted: 07/10/2024 13:25:46

Richard, if you suggest some modifications to the image to make it better, you can post it yourself directly after your comment. You do not have to send it to the maker by email.   Posted: 07/11/2024 06:09:05

The motion blur and the hazy orange sky give this photo a dreamy quality that I find oddly peaceful. Unfortunately, Richard did such a good review I'm not sure I have much to add. I agree with the small amount of parallax at the edges and trying to get a shot where none of the riders are touching the center support. I actually like the landscape orientation as I think the rest of the carnival adds visual interest. This is my first month in the travel group so I'm still learning the ropes but I'm wondering if this picture meets the criteria for a travel photo. Couldn't this be a carnival anywhere?   Posted: 07/12/2024 07:00:46

Karen, if this Carnival set up is permanent, and you were to go there and recognize it, yes it would meet the criteria of Travel Photo, otherwise; it is just a generic carnival.   Posted: 07/13/2024 14:12:03

Hi Rizwan, I also like the the color combination in the composition and the blur. Richard already gave you valuable technical comments - not much to add. I like the vertical version, although as Karen says the rest of the scene adds context.   Posted: 07/23/2024 17:58:01
