January 2025 - Kazakh Herd Movement
About the Image(s)
This is an image from western Mongolia. The Kazakh herdsmen migrate three times a year to take advantage of different climates at various altitudes. I was privileged to join a group that followed a Spring migration journey. This entailed long daily hikes (support van available), trying to get in front of various groups to get photos. The family we were with was one of many, so there were many photo opportunities in all directions.
I had to pull up the detail in the shadows but the a1 gave me the dynamic range to do so without losing the bright whites.

The slight S shaped curve of the herd leads my eye through the image toward the lighter background. I like the perspective.
My only technical suggestion is to bracket your exposure to ensure you get what you want. My gut feel is the scene is so white that the exposure needs to be more plus so the sensor will not see white toward the 18% grey side. So I suggest taking no chances and bracket the exposure with both a positive and negative bias.   Posted: 01/03/2025 07:00:25
