About the Image(s)

I took this in Kerala (India) in February this year. I had gone there to attend the prayer festival of Theyyam.

Theyyam is a vibrant ritualistic performance art form practiced predominantly in the northern Malabar region of Kerala, India, particularly in Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Rooted in ancient tribal and Dravidian traditions, it blends dance, music, and elaborate costumes to invoke deities and ancestral spirits. Performed by artists from specific communities, Theyyam involves intricate makeup, colorful attire, and headgear, transforming performers into divine figures worshipped by devotees. Accompanied by traditional instruments like the chenda drum, the performances are held in sacred groves or village temples, often during festivals between December and April. Theyyam serves as a spiritual and social medium, addressing community issues, offering blessings, and preserving cultural heritage through its mesmerizing storytelling and rituals.

This is one of the pictures I took during my few days there.

Hi Som, very interesting ceremony and you were fortunate to attend it. The costume and the colors are gorgeous. You choose a close up and my suggestion would be to crop on the left side as you have 2 women with cut off faces. Also, I wonder if you have an image where the right side shows the full head of the participant. Another option, given how you describe the ceremony would be to use an image that shows more of the event taken from further back.   Posted: 05/20/2025 10:18:53

Hi Gloria, I take your point; there are people milling around at these events, so it is difficult to get a "clean" shot, so I chose to do close-ups rather than wide-angle shots.

I will go back and check if I have a frame with where the person on the right is not cut-off.

I like Richard's crop. I am always a bit wary of entering square crops into salons/exhibitions, so I was trying to keep the original aspect ratio. Biut maybe I should use square crops more, where they make a better composition, as it does here.

Sounds like a very interesting event. The lighting on this image is very uniform with no shadows. The colors are very vibrant. It is always difficult to remove distractions when shooting events. For an alternative I cropped the image as tightly as possible.   Posted: 05/20/2025 14:52:30

I like your crop. Yes, this was about 11 AM, so the light flat, but the colours sort of make up for the flat light, I think.
