Farnsworth Peak reflecting on Great Salt Lake in Utah by Kelsey Swanson

June 2025 - Farnsworth Peak reflecting on Great Salt Lake in Utah

About the Image(s)

My goal of this photo was to capture the reflection of the mountain in this smaller, still area of the lake. I made global adjustments and made the temperature a little warmer as I wanted to keep this nice blue sky. I cropped the image to 2x4. I photographed this mountain in this one area multiple times this evening. I felt this image was more successful than the others, even with high sun. Unfortunately with how the clouds stuck around the peak it didn’t allow for light to cast onto the mountain. I didn’t take a long exposure until shortly after this shot when more clouds came in and the lenticular cloud effect was occurring over the mountain but their were too many clouds then so it became a bit of a grey and white blur with no light on the landscape. Later that day around sunset time the lack of sunlight on everything resulted in the image being quite flat. I wish a took a long exposure at this moment to soften the cloud shapes but I’m happy the reflection came out successfully. Any post processing suggestions to make this photo pop a little bit more, especially for the mountain?

As you said the quality of the light is quite harsh and the perfect shot would have cast light on the mountain. I still like the image and tried to process it a bit more in PS/LR. I cropped the image to wide screen cinema format to emphasis the reflection of the mountain in the lake. The highlights have been reduced. I did as you suggested and masked the mountain and upped the exposure and contrast. Perhaps you can stack your images throughout the day in PS then take want you like from each time of the day.

Hi Kelsey, I really like your image as I am drawn to images with reflections. I would crop some of the brown on the right side to focus the eye on the mountains and their reflections. I agree on increasing contrast and try to bring out some more of the blue in the sky. Great scenery.   Posted: 06/14/2025 16:09:50
