July 2025 - Blue Swallow Hotel

About the Image(s)

Storm chasing along Route 66 a couple of years ago. When there are no
active storms, our group would look for interesting places to visit and
photograph. This is a town along the historic US Rte 66, an old motel that
has been maintained in its original state (outwardly at least). It is still
a functioning motel, but with some garages to one side with murals and
paraphernalia from the 60s.

Our group leader shot this from a lot angle with the Rte 66 sign dead
center. I liked the off-center angle, it had more of a surreal feel. But
in retrospect I should have done it both ways.

The mid day light and partly cloudy sky made for a changing light situation,
and some challenges in exposing the shot. When left to my own devices, I
tend to set the aperture and exposure speed and let ISO sit on Auto. But
when I'm with a photo leader they really harp on keeping ISO low. So in
this case I believe I was on full manual.

Shutter speed: 1/50 sec
Aperture: 11
Exposure mode: Manual
Exposure compensation: -2/3
Flash: Off
Metering mode: Multi-segment
ISO: 100
Lens: FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS
Focal length: 24mm

I certainly see the surreal image here and find it very creative. I like the the offset building angles and lower approach. This works well with the vibrant colors. This does create surrealism for me. You did a very good job of capturing this image in some harsh light. I find the composition to be spot on. My only wish is for separation of the car roof from the building. Congrats on a visually compelling image.   Posted: 07/04/2025 07:16:10

This is certainly an amazing image and I really love the angle it is shot at. Midday with patchy clouds is brutal, but you leveraged the contrast to emphasize textures. Congratualtions for such an amazing shot.   Posted: 07/09/2025 18:46:43
