About the Image(s)

ISO64, f11, 10/15/30s. Shot at 40mm with a Tamron 24-70mm Lens on a
Nikon D850. I tried multiple crops on this image. I wanted to show
both the bridge and Alberta Legislature Building in the image, but
that doesn't seem to work. There's a white building in the foreground
and the power lines, which create distraction. For post processing I
darkened the sky and decreased highlights on the Legislature building.

May I suggest avoiding such a severe crop? An alternative would be to stitch portrait ratio images together taken at 70 mm and create a pano of specifically what you had in mind for your final image. It is a beautiful city.

Hi Rizwan, A beautiful city indeed. Maybe a zoom lens would have been better rather than extensive cropping. If the focus is the Legislature Building, I find the tall building on the right and the bright lights in the foreground a bit distracting.   Posted: 07/08/2025 17:02:10

To me, the crop is not extreme. I have certainly entered and done well with similar crops under related conditions - basically seeing the "image within the shot" after the fact. But, I think it would be better to take it into an enhancing program such as DXO Pure RAW first, then edit the png file in CR or LR. Once you do your edits, then try sharpening it with High Pass or else Topaz.

The problem area in this frame of course is the bright highlights both in the capitol building and at the right edge. I believe the detail exists but will require some work in the Exposure/ Shadows/ Highlights area to bring it up. I think there is a competitive image in there but you need to do more work to pull it out.
