Elephant Close Up by Richard Distlerath

September 2025 - Elephant Close Up

About the Image(s)

This image was captured from a hide at the Last Word Resort in Madikwe, South Africa. The lighting is quite harsh but I had to capture this image when the elephants approached the watering hole. My intent was to use a wide angle lens and fill the frame with elephant. I used the OM1 Mark2 with a 12mm f2.0 lens. Settings were 1/640 sec, iso 125 and f4. I waited patiently and my heart raced as the elephants approached the watering hole. Then one of them started walking across the front of the hide. A wonderful memory but not the best image!
I have processed this to the best of my abilities but still wish some of the harshness could be removed.
Any suggestions for capture or processing? What could I do differently?

I think you did a great job of filling the frame with elephants and the fact that they separated out so well is perfect. The harsh sun doesn't bother me a bit, but the top of your hide does. I'd get rid of it and let the blue sky in. Great elephant shot.   Posted: 09/01/2025 16:12:47
