ISO 1000, 1/140, f9 @110mm, shot with Nikon 70-200mm on a Nikon D850. This image was shot at Negombo Fish Market, Sri Lanka. The image provides a glimpse into the daily life of a fish market. The setting, with the baskets of fish, the ocean in the background, and the other workers, adds context and a sense of place. I think showing the hands of the subject and what she is doing would improve the picture a lot. But the hands were behind a basket and I didn’t realize that while taking that shot. I should have taken that shot at a different angle to reveal the hands of the girl. What do you think?

You did a pretty good job of criticizing your image. Your question goes to the the heart of the question of what story are you intending to tell? Only you are able to answer this question. The story of your subject working in the fish market is a good story. Then you go about shooting the behavior of the story you wish to tell. I find the crocked horizon line through the head/neck a bit distracting. In most portrait photos the horizon line falls through the shoulder or lower. So here as you suggested a different angle camera position and at a lower height may tell a stronger story. I offer an alternative cropping for consideration.   Posted: 09/01/2025 20:19:45

I agree with Richard. Doubt it's allowed, but AI adjustment of the bottom edge could fill in the hands. I like the colors and the look of your subject. Having the background elements blurred is good. Interesting portrait.   Posted: 09/02/2025 11:40:14
