Inside the Heart of the Colosseum – A Rare Perspective by Majdi Naser, PPSA, BPSA

April 2025 - Inside the Heart of the Colosseum – A Rare Perspective

About the Image(s)

When I think of the Colosseum, I often picture its magnificent outer facade that’s so famous in photographs. However, my favorite shot takes you behind the scenes, giving a rare glimpse inside the massive hypogeum where gladiators once awaited their fate.

Using my Nikon camera, I captured this ultra-wide shot at 17mm, which beautifully reveals the scale and intricate architecture of the amphitheater’s inner core. Here are the details of the shot I took:
- Shutter speed: 1/320 sec
- Aperture: f/22
- ISO: 200
- Lens: 17.0–35.0mm f/2.8

I chose a narrow aperture and a low ISO to ensure that every detail remained sharp across the frame. The dramatic sky and rich textures in the stonework really brought the image to life for me. Shooting at 17mm allowed me to capture a sweeping view of the Colosseum’s elliptical interior, highlighting both its grandeur and the signs of aging that tell its story.

This photograph isn’t just an image to me; it feels like a doorway into history, allowing me to experience and share a moment from the past in a way that words sometimes can't.

This is an amazing shot. The sky makes it even more amazing. I've never been to Rome but imagine the Colosseum is usually swarming with people. What luck for you to only have a few. What a special piece of architecture preserved for the ages. I don't have a lens that will go as wide as 17mm, but it sure works for grand buildings.   Posted: 04/18/2025 15:43:41

I like this shot.
Colosseum is often full of people, did you shoot many photos and used photoshop to remove people from the frame?
I am not sure what aperture is better in this case: 8, 11 or 22. Could you or someone else share your thought. Thank you very much.   Posted: 04/18/2025 16:58:38

Hey Hai,

I was lucky there was no one there because it was a bit heavy raining.

I'm following Bryan Peterson's tips for the aperture. In such cases, the max is always.   Posted: 04/19/2025 13:01:14

Majdi, the tack sharp and spot on color of this photo make this photo absolutely incredible. I love that the threatening sky seems to reflect the craziness of what used to happen in the colliseum.   Posted: 04/19/2025 10:42:50
