Red Rumped Cassique Weaving by Lillian Roberts, APSA, GMPSA/B

June 2025 - Red Rumped Cassique Weaving

About the Image(s)

Taken on the grounds surrounding Iguazu Falls (Brazil side I'm pretty sure) in Nov, 2023. This is an example of an image I worked hard for but hasn't done well in competition. These birds are in constant motion, in a tree with bright sky showing through the patchy shaded foliage. Just getting one in focus is a challenge, as they dart in and out of their nests.

Cassiques are weavers as is shown here. They nest in colonies but each pair builds their own nests - typically multiple nests but some are dummies built to distract potential predators or parasitic species (ie, birds that lay their eggs in the nests of other birds).

Unfortunately, judges don't score based on how much effort went into the image! I still like this one.

When I first looked at this image, I didn't notice that it had grass in it's beak. Perhaps reducing the highlights a bit on the bill would make this more apparent. It's a pretty busy image. I find the upper and lower left to be a bit distracting. I would crop them out. The long out of focus leaf on the far right could be cropped out as well.   Posted: 06/11/2025 13:59:42

There is catchlight on the bird's eyes. It is well focused...dark plumage of the bird, its bright yellow beak, and the vibrant green of the foliage is nice. But this is a very busy shot.   Posted: 06/21/2025 17:25:43
