April 2026 - red-eyed tree frog

About the Image(s)

This is a red-eyed tree frog photographed in Costa Rica last November.
Lit by clearing in rainforest canopy shot at ISO 400 with a 70-200mm Sony lens on a A7RV body. Focal length used was 291mm at ISO 400 - F4 and 1/50s (on a tripod). -0.7EV used and spot metered. Heavily cropped to make the subject larger in frame. Post-processed in Lightroom Classic (exposure increased) and using Topaz DeNoise.

Nice clean portrait of a highly charismatic frog! I don't understand how you got a 291mm focal distance from a 70-200mm lens?

The colors really pop here, and I think your focus on the eye was appropriate, though the resulting focus fade on the branch is mildly distracting. I feel you could take down the highlights on both the branch and the frog, everywhere except maybe the eyes.

The very clean BG feels artificial within a rainforest setting. Judges will assume it is a setup, which is allowed in ND competition.

Very nice. I, too, think the highlights could come down a tiny bit on the frog's body, but mostly I would tone down the brightness of the branch on the right edge, maybe crop in a tiny bit more to get rid of the white spot.   Posted: 04/15/2026 11:00:18
