September 2024 - Giraffe Slurp
About the Image(s)
This was taken during our recent trip to Africa. We were in a dry/desert environment where the animals congregate at a waterhole. This image was captured from a photography hide which was placed right next to the waterhole….beautiful eye-level view of approaching wildlife. The image is uncropped.
Technical Details: Canon R3 with RF 600/F4.0 lens
Shot at 1/1500 sec and f/4.0 at ISO 100.
Matrix metering.
I did not do much post-processing, except bringing down the highlights.
Best regards,
Raj

A great capture and good timing as Pinaki said. Excellent eye level shot and nice shallow depth of field blurring the background nicely. Never seen this type of giraffe shot before - well done.   Posted: 09/08/2024 21:38:03
Raj, This image has a lot going for it. I really like the action of the water, and the shape of the water drip. You take a risk using a prime lens in this situation, and could easily have missed this shot altogether, so kudos to your mindful framing as the head started to come up! The image definitely works as is, though my eye wants a little more space around the animal - for example, we have an "amputated" forelimb on the left and no space to the right or above for him to move into.
Still, I believe you will gain acceptances with this image if you enter it as is.

Excellent capture and timing, Raj.
Were you using a flash? As the head appears brighter than the neck and leg. From a distance it does not 'look' normal. I would suggest brighting the neck some (burn and dodge is allowed in Nature rules), but not a bright as the face to even out the image.
Overall, an excellent image!

Thanks for your helpful suggestions.
Lillian: appreciate your comment on amputated leg....made me laugh -:) I can clone it out...but I assume that would be not accepted in ND. Unfortunately, I did not have any compositional flexibility with a 600mm lens.
Jim: I did not use a flash nor have I used a radial mask. It was just interesting lighting with a beam of light on his face. As ypou suggested, I can dodge the neck to lower the contrast. Thanks for your suggestion.   Posted: 09/28/2024 19:51:30
