Buffalo Scrimmage by Raj Panandiker

December 2024 - Buffalo Scrimmage

About the Image(s)

Early in the morning, we saw a big herd of buffaloes by the roadside. Most of them simply ignored us and kept feeding. But two sub-adults started going at each other. I think it was simply a mock fight, but sure looked real with horns locked, dust flying and them pushing each other. I had to move around so that the morning sun lit their bodies and they moved sufficiently away from the heard to avoid distraction. The cloud of dust around their heads gives a fuzzy look but the emotion is clearly seen in their eyes.
Shot with Canon R5 M2 and RF 100-500 f 4.5-7.1 lens.
Shutter speed 1/2000 sec; f/6.7; shot at 500 mm; matrix metering, ISO1600.
The image was denoised in DXO and processed in LR, color adjustments and sharpening applied.

Fabulous. I would maybe warm and lighten the bison a tiny bit so they pop more.   Posted: 12/11/2024 17:20:23

Nice image. I will try to blur the background and try to brighten the bisons more so that they stand out.   Posted: 12/19/2024 22:22:48

This is a fabulous moment that you captured very well, Raj! I agree that the whole image is a little underexposed, and the bison merge into the BG. I tried increasing the exposure overall by about 45%, then reduced it on the BG to about the original. I also warmed up the bison very slightly.
