Thirsty Bees by Birgit Langmann

May 2022 - Thirsty Bees

About the Image(s)

Canon EOS Rebel, ISO 160, 1/195, f5.6, polarizer, 115 mm lens, +0.67 eval metering.

Biking through Tucson's awesome bike trails (paved), I found a shady spot that has a small puddle of water. There were a number of bees drinking. The surrounding area was still green and lush with vegetation.

In case you are wondering why I had +0.67 evaluative metering...I often use that for winter photographing and completely forgot it was there when I went to Arizona. Oops.

I like the line-up of bees and the different textures in the photo. I'm having a hard time with the whitish area that draws my attention, and also it's hard to tell where the water is that the bees are drinking. Except for their position and your description I wouldn't know what I'm looking at. I'm not really sure that this is a good photojournalism photo because it doesn't depict the human presence in our world. It might do better in nature, but you would have to crop out the "hand of man" in the bottom right.   Posted: 05/22/2022 18:52:22

I agree with the bright spot. Couldn't figure out that out. I should have tried a different position. Didn't think of it at the time. I disagree on the not photojournalism only because of the state of bees in completely human driven. Their numbers are decreasing at alarming rates and humans depend on them for pollination of food. I would that is pretty significant.   Posted: 05/30/2022 10:50:18

Good point. I stand corrected. But keep in mind who might be judging PJ photos. They might not make the connection you just made.   Posted: 05/30/2022 11:45:30
