May 2024 - Haystack Rock Reflection

About the Image(s)

This seastack on Canon Beach in Oregon is relatively unique in that is generally surrounded at high tide and out at low tide. It has significant vegetation that supports a large variety of birds. Bird watchers are commonly found here with telescopes or binoculars. A great place to spend a few nights on the Oregon Coast.

ISO 400, 16mm, f/16, 1/125 sec with Olumpus M1-Mrk II and 12-100 f/4 lens.

Nice photo. The photo is sharped. the mountain with the bracketing of clouds looks great. The presence of tourists added life to the frame

Of course, the reflection is there, but still I would have preferred some more interesting element in f/g. Or compromising the reflection, the photo can be cropped by 4 inches from bottom, to give more weightage to mountain & clouds, I feel   Posted: 05/08/2024 05:01:17

This location is well known so I think this image definitively fit in the travel section. Considering the importance of the reflections the choice to have the image divided 50/50 is reasonable. The image is sharp and the clouds help to frame the big rock. I personally think people in this image are creating some distraction from the main subject, but this is a very subjective assessment.

I believe this looks unique enough that it should be considered a PTD image even if you have no idea where it is. Of course it is true that not all judges would agree and it does take a risk.   Posted: 05/10/2024 18:29:18

Stan, I feel that the reflection is an essential part of this photo, so the 50/50 crop is quite good. And in my opinion, the presence of the people adds scale to emphasize the enormous rock. Nice photo.   Posted: 05/15/2024 22:22:07
