May 2024 - Cartagena City at night

About the Image(s)

I return to Cartagena, Columbia for this month’s image and another night-time image. Interestingly, I have just been to Cartagena in South East Spain which is a very interesting old city, with many Roman period things to see and enjoy (I will post an image from here in future months).

One of the joys of travelling via a Cruise Ship (especially an Adult only one) is that there is often a restaurant on an outside deck and this was the case in February this year when this was taken. My wife and I had this view while we enjoyed too much food, with the sky turning in front of our eyes. By about 7:00 in the evening I took this, both because of the sky colours but also I wanted something in the foreground which the 2 boats provided.

It was taken with my iPhone hand held with it deciding on exposure of 1/7 sec at f2.8 and ISO 1,000. I had my elbows resting like a tripod on the guard-rail. PP in Lightroom which deals with noise very well now.

We were in Cartagena Columbia this spring and concentrated on the old city. This image is very different than that. I think the foreground boats are a significant plus. Something was needed. A good capture in excellent light. Some judges may feel this could be any city on the water, but to me it is clearly unique, I just would not know where it is. There are a lot of things I don't know.   Posted: 05/07/2024 17:11:37

Thank you Stan. I believe the requirement for Travel images is that indeed not everyone needs to know where the image was taken, just that it is unique. So here the buildings are obviously unique. I paste (for benefit of all here) from the Definition - " 1. If the image is predominantly or exclusively a land-, sea- or cityscape, these "scapes" must include characteristic, distinctive and recognizable physical features, although it is not necessary that the image identify the exact location;"   Posted: 05/08/2024 01:01:48

An excellent image. Simply loved it.

The colour gradation in the sky, sharp focused cityscape, perfect exposure, the leading lines by the small boats in the f/g.... superb. The photo is unbelievably sharp for 1/7 speed & that too from cruise ship. Lovely image indeed.   Posted: 05/08/2024 05:08:28

Many thanks Vinaya! Ship wasn't moving which helps! It was a late out of port day.   Posted: 05/08/2024 08:25:01

Adrian, this is another very nice cityscape. I echo what the other said regarding colors and sharpness. This once again go back to the question "do we still need our cameras considering how good phone camera have become? I think your idea to get the two boats included is adding to the image because from one side creates something interesenting in the foreground, and from the other side the wakes of the boat create leading lines guiding the eye to the main subject. Regarding how unique are these buildings I would argue skylines like this are becoming very common so I am not sure if I would consider these buildings unique.

Michele - thank you for comments. Buildings looked at superficially of course all look similar, but this skyline with these buildings in their position have of course to be unique.   Posted: 05/09/2024 14:08:10

Adrian, I echo what others have said. The boats and the waves emanating from them take this picture from what might have been a pretty, but somewhat pedestrian shot, to a much stronger, unique image. Normally, I might have objected to bifurcation of the image, but the presence of the boats in the lower half obviates that objection. The colors - red in the sky in particular - are lovely.   Posted: 05/16/2024 00:04:25
