About the Image(s)

The Abbey of Santissima Trinita'of Monte Sacro, is located on Monte Sacro north of Mattinata, Puglia, Italy. It was built in 490aD and it was an important destination for pilgrims. It flourished up to XV century and was abandoned in XVI. The abbey can be reached after a 45 minute hike mostly in the Foresta Umbra. I went there after a storm and found an amazing location only for me. I spent there a couple of hours exploring and admiring the work done and thinking that at the end Mother Nature is taking back what we built.

This month I am submitting 3 images because I feel they can provide a better representation of this location.

All images were taken with the Fuji GFX100S with the GF 20-35 Lens and a tripod.

Michele, These dark, brooding shots are quite interesting. I am somewhat bothered by the fact that they lack a focal point. My eye does not know where to land. But you do convey the rather chaotic detritus of the decaying structures. The use of a dark, muted palate was the appropriate way to present the site. For me, the first "original" picture is the most successful.   Posted: 10/24/2024 01:17:11

Michele -thank you for posting the information here. Good, well developed images of an interesting place which is clearly unique. I must agree that the scene is rather random & complicated to naturally result in a pleasing image.   Posted: 10/24/2024 09:38:30

Nancy and Adrian, thank you for taking the time to look at my images and sharing your thoughts. Your comments make me smile, because that was my "artistic" intention with these images. This abbey was an economic resource up to 1,400 aD. Then the place was progressively abandoned. Mother Nature, has consequently claim back what the man has built. So the images I have posted wanted to provide the sense of disorder for something that was great in the past but is now gone. Indeed, I am working on a project photographing places that once saw some glory but now are back to misery and ruins. To me is a metaphor of the current society. We are working hard to destroy our planet. Since we are not happy of that, we are now also filling the space around the planet with a huge amount of satellite debris and junk metal pieces.
However, from photography point of view I understand your point and maybe these images would work better in another section.

Best wishes.   Posted: 10/24/2024 11:24:49

The sadness of being the architecture of glory turned into ruins is very well described in words & represented in the series of photos. All images are sharp & v well use of light & shadow to tell the story of destruction   Posted: 10/29/2024 01:31:45
