Studious retailer from Bahamas by Adrian Binney, PPSA

January 2025 - Studious retailer from Bahamas

About the Image(s)

This was taken a year ago, when we had a day at Nassau, Bahamas - a horrendously touristy nightmare of a place! Cruise ships and vast beach-side hotels every-where - so we were part of the problem! We were on a “small” ship with 1,800 guests - there were 5 ships in that day, totalling over 22,000!! Apologies, to those who like Bahamas - away from the main ports may well be totally different!
It was part of our itinerary on a 2-month long cruise and we managed to find some interesting historical areas - but after 4 hours we’d had enough!
Fortunately, we get up early and could spend time in a pleasant craft market, before the volume of tourists descended on the place. This chap intrigued me but I was unable to get eye contact in a photograph.
I didn’t feel safe having my camera gear - so this was taken using my phone (with wrist attachment on!). I did not need to do much development on it.

I always love candid shots & this is one of them. 2nd thing, I got always amazed with is reading habits of these poor people. while doing their hard work to earn bread & butter, they squeezed time to read, update themselves with latest events. Creditable! I found an image as a good PT image   Posted: 01/06/2025 02:08:10

Adrian, your feelings about the touristy feel and look of a place surely resonates w/all of us. Despite the difficulties, though, you managed to get a good shot of this Bahamian man reading the Obituary/Religion section of the paper (with its own powerful image on the front page). My only suggested edit would be to crop it right between the anchor bag and the pink bag. If you agree, I'd love to see it after that edit.   Posted: 01/16/2025 13:44:53

I think I would leave it just as it is. There are a lot of things that set this image apart and make it a good PTD image. The Bahamas bag, the obituaries, the way he is dressed, the apearance of the skin on his legs. His face glasses and hat. I think the image is improved by his eyes being focued on the paper and then it is understandable that you can't see into his eyes. I like it as it is.   Posted: 01/16/2025 17:59:47

Adrian in my opinion this is an excellent image and I agree with Stan that the image is good as it is. I found the scene very interesting and also ironic. It is clear this person needs tourists for making the day but he is relaxing reading a newspaper while he is waiting.

Best
