Kalaripayattu by Vinaya Mathews, PPSA

January 2025 - Kalaripayattu

About the Image(s)

Happy new year 2025 to all of you! Wishing you great photo opportunities during 2025!

An image was captured during my latest photo tour to Kerala, India. It is captured hand held with slow shutter speed to enforce the action. An image is not eligible for PTD session of salon as Kalaripayattu players were invited to perform.

Exif: f16, 1/8, ISO 100 Canon R6 24-105. R6 camera's lowest ISO is 100, so to achieve 1/8 speed, f 16 was required

Vineyard- nice to see a different type of image. I very much like your low viewpoint and position so there is no overlap of the players. You may lan to field this in PIDC.

I would consider cropping from the left, so the image ends just left of the blurred person - this may add to the drama with the body position of the right player leaning from the bottom right corner. I would also crop or remove the bits on the sand currently central bottom, to give a cleaner boundary. Nice.   Posted: 01/16/2025 12:40:03

Vinaya, Happy 2025 to you and the other members of our group as well. I agree with Adrian that it's refreshing to see such a different type of image and that the bottom bits of sand might be cropped. In addition, I'd love to see the right side cropped so that the right foot of the player on the right is closer to the bottom right corner of the image, rather than deleting the rocks on the left, which give the image some additional interest and a feeling of "place."   Posted: 01/16/2025 14:13:06

I prefer this (to main image) but possibly have a tad more sand under the right foot if possible.   Posted: 01/17/2025 06:48:36

I don't think judges would consider this a PTD image. I don't know if the clothes and sword or whatever it is establish it as a place or region on the earth, but I suspect three judges would not. I like the image, but I would crop the bottom to get that rock or whatever it is out of the image.   Posted: 01/16/2025 17:50:52

As I clearly mentioned in my narration that it is not eligible for PTD, I always abide the rules, I respect them   Posted: 01/17/2025 03:15:39

Vinaya, I like this image a lot. There is a great light and the fact the fight happens on the beach add some interest. I would also crop the bottom to eliminate the distracting rocks. I also think you have a great light but the image is a little flat. So you may want to consider to increased contrast and clarity a little. I agree with Stan this image might have issues of being accepted as a PTD image. However, it would be an excellent PIDC image. In that case I would also clone out the branch or whatever it is on the lower left of the image. My eye keep going to that. While in PTD you can't touch anything, in PIDC you can.

Best wishes

Thanks a lot Michele, for detailed analysis. yes, it is not of PTD, I know. If I will participate in salons in future, I will definitely try your suggestion of sending for PIDC. Thank you once again
