January 2025 - Wat Chaya Mangkalarm Thai temple
About the Image(s)
This is the Wat Chaya Mangkalaram Thai (Buddhist) temple in Penang, Malaysia, where most Malaysians follow Islam. The sky was quite beautiful in color but when I turned it to bw, it became a far more striking background to the spires of the temple.
Happy New Year to all,
Sherry

Sherry - your mono is perfect for this - what a sky!You did well to get this people-free. My only suggestion is to play with the Prospective controls as I find the leaning modern building to the right distracting (and the right 'tower').   Posted: 01/16/2025 12:59:36

Thank you so much, Adrian. I agree with you about the leaning building and know that I should certainly learn - after all this time - how to use the Prospective controls. That is now a high priority on my 2025 resolution list as I have many other images w/the same problem. Time to get serious;^))   Posted: 01/16/2025 13:31:21

Adrian's comment about perpective is good as long as you can fix it without that spire getting even closer to the top edge of the picture. I don't like the building on the right and that will make some of it go away. Your angle of view would normally be ideal, but perhaps if you had been a few steps to the left and perhaps back a bit you could get that modern building to be behind the tower and the overlapping building on the right out of the image. I don't know if it would work with the camera and lens you were using, but if you can get far enough back to be able to get the shot with the camera level, then you can crop off th bottom and you won't have a perspective issue.   Posted: 01/16/2025 18:12:52

Thank you for your comments and suggestions, Stan and Michele. I'm replying to both of you to say that it was near impossible to get this shot w/out people. So I took the temple from several different perspectives - especially from the left and back further - trying not to have the modern building showing. But to no avail. Other tourists and photographers left little wiggle room in which to get a clean shot. That being said, I may still try to get myself up to speed on the perspective controls but for now, I need to get myself back to taking photos, which I haven't done since before Covid struck. I don't think I remember ANYTHING, so my learning curve is going to be a major challenge;^))   Posted: 01/16/2025 22:13:54

Sherry one thing you can consider to take an image on a crowded place without people is to use long exposure. You obviously need a tripod, but 2-3 minute exposure will make the people disappear (unless they stand for a long time in front of your camera....).

Michele, I don't know that I will be traveling w/a tripod as I am old and have enough trouble carrying myself around. But that was an excellent suggestion. Thank you;^))   Posted: 01/17/2025 10:15:42

Sherry, I think this is a very good monochrome travel image. I agree with Adrian and Stan regarding the leaning building creating some unbalance in the image. However, I like the distorted prospective of the wide angle for this image. I am wondering if moving around you could have "hidden" the building behind one of the tower. I also think that if you try to correct the perspective in this image you will cut out the tip of the temple and this will make the image worse.
