Man and his dog in Gran Canaria by Adrian Binney, EPSA, LRPS

February 2025 - Man and his dog in Gran Canaria

About the Image(s)

This was taken on 11 January when we had a day there while on a 65 day cruise within the Caribbean and Central America area plus Amazon (about which more in future months).

We were in a small old fishing harbour called Puerto Morgen with old Spanish buildings maintained well, when I came across a local and his dog, so I waited a while. He started clearly chatting to him as I took a number of images. I chose this one from the group as he and the dog are clearly enjoying each-other’s company.

This is street photography and I’ll be interested in views relative to Travel and a PTD image. I believe it should be clear it’s probably taken in Europe. It’s already done well for me in a club open competition and have entered it in a US based PTD Exhibition to see how it does there.

I did not have to do much PP work - taken with Olympus OM-1 and 12-100 f4 lens at 92mm (so 184mm FF) 1/200 f6.3 ISO320.

V nice, candid shot, Adrian. the moment of both of them lost in each other is captured v well. I found the cropping v tight, especially at RHS & at bottom. As both are looking at each other, the photo can be treated as the reflection photo i.e. almost equal space can be kept at both the sides, I felt.

But overall good shot. better in PT section than PJD section, I think.   Posted: 02/05/2025 23:59:32

Thank you for your comments - v helpful. I was trying to have the 2 faces close to centre of image, but there is more to RHS in my original   Posted: 02/11/2025 10:55:13

Adrian, is a great image for PJ of Human Interest. Lovely interaction of the man with his dog. It is sharp.cHere, you are the only one that knows this image was created in Gran Canaria. There is no relevant land or architecture feature or ethnic characteristic to give you a hint as where is this.   Posted: 02/08/2025 15:50:48

Thank you Isaac - I'll put in into PJ and a life section of PJD.   Posted: 02/11/2025 10:56:40

Adrian, I can just echo what Vinaya and Isaac said. This is an outstanding street photography telling a compelling story, with the men mimicking the face of the dog. However, this image could have been taken anywhere in the world so unlikely an image that could to well in the travel division.

At the end I guess that the important thing is that this is great image.

Best

While I understand the comments about a better PJ image, it is, but there is something about it that to me says it is on an island where the people and dress are western, and I would give it a break that it shows a region. I like that the personality of both the man and the dog come out so well in the image. I doubt three judges would all give it a good PTD score however.   Posted: 02/23/2025 22:29:20
