Gates of Paradise, Florence Italy by Sherry Weinstein

November 2025 - Gates of Paradise, Florence Italy

About the Image(s)

The "Gates of Paradise" signify the symbolic entrance to salvation through their role as the main entrance to the Florence Baptistery, which served as the gateway to the sacred space of baptism and spiritual rebirth. Artistically, they are considered a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance due to Lorenzo Ghiberti's revolutionary use of perspective, detail, and narrative storytelling in the Old Testament scenes depicted on the panels. Culturally, the doors represent Florence's status as a center for artistic and cultural achievement during the Renaissance.

To me, the actual structure is magnificent but when the nuns clustered around the gates, it became an ideal blending of both the artist's work and the nuns' devotion.

Sherry, as you mentioned in your legend, without the nuns this would a "museum" like image. With the group of nuns it becomes an excellent image. I also like that you don't see the faces of the nuns so the observer can just image what they are thinking/saying while looking at door.

Best wishes

Adding nuns is an excellent idea. Thoughtful capture. Sharp image, with perfect exposure. For me, I found the image too tight. I would have preferred more space both sides, if possible, of course   Posted: 11/14/2025 05:32:17

The nuns rather than tourists make the image as a Photo Travel image. The lighting on the doors is wonderful. Yes, the image is tight, but I found myself enjoying this unique shot of a highly rcognizeable location a great deal. There is no way for us to know why you shot it so tight, but it is still an exceptional image.   Posted: 11/27/2025 16:38:17
