Blue Grass Jam by Gary Walter, QPSA

February 2025 - Blue Grass Jam

About the Image(s)

Title: Blue Grass Jam
Equipment Used: Canon EOS R6Mk2 EF24-105 f/4L IS USM at 42 mm
Camera Settings: Aperture Priority, ISO 2500, 1/160 sec, f/4, 0 EV, center weighted average metering
Lighting Conditions: 24 November 2024 1:49 PM, Ambient incadescent lighting inside the Floyd Country Store

Where and When: In the Floyd Country Store in Floyd, Virginia USA. This area is in the Appalachian Mountains of south western Virginia where blue grass music was born (before Nashville came along....). There is a blue grass jam every Sunday afternoon and a second one every Sunday evening. It is free and people from the community come to enjoy the music and dance. People just show up with their instruments and are free to join in the music making.

Post-Processing: In Lightroom: enabled lens profile, remove chromatic aberration, straightened & cropped, adjusted blacks, whites, shadows, highlights, increased exposure, then adjusted dehaze, clarity, adjusted contrast, vibrance & saturation to view the image as seen by the eye.

Middle aged and elderly people have a leisurely leisure life in their spare time, and those who love instruments and music gather together to share wonderful music from the bottom of their hearts, which makes them very happy.   Posted: 02/16/2025 03:52:04

A photo showing sentiment.
Somehow, I feel the crop being too tight towards the bottom. Is it possible to avoid cropping the guitar and the elbows of the people in the front?   Posted: 02/17/2025 09:27:51

Sylvie, I get that a different crop might be desirable. I attach a copy of the original so you can see the difficulty created by the limited space in the venue. On the right and the left there are plenty of things that interfere with making this a better image. As it turns out, there is only one limited space in which to take a photo and avoiding all the extra people is not possible. There is a huge crowd to the right with dining tables and standing only crowds. On the left standing room only. I also attached a second crop that might accommodate the desires indicated.

This is such an iconic place and very famous as it is on the Crooked Road tour through southwest Virginia and other nearby states in the Appalachian mountain region. This famous and trying to find a time when it is not crowded is nearly impossible. In any event, I wanted to show this piece of history.   Posted: 02/20/2025 15:08:04

I agree with Sylvie Tas that it might be better if the bottom could go down a bit and let the row of heads go up a bit.   Posted: 02/19/2025 10:48:43

I actually liked the tight crop…. Can see the artists closer and more intimate. If this is a famous place, then it should work in PTD   Posted: 02/28/2025 13:11:45
