Pillars of Hercules by David Stout, EPSA

May 2024 - Pillars of Hercules

About the Image(s)

The columns are what remains of the Temple of Hercules situated at the Citadel of Amman in Jordan.
Legend tells that Hercules - a figure of immense strength, pushed some columns to bring down the building in a fit of rage - hence the broken column in the foreground of my image.

David, I forget that the Romans were established in so many different areas, and never thought of them as having been in Jordan. A beautifully sharp image with excellent lighting. With the dark blue of the sky, contrasted with the lighting on the stones, it must have been late in the day or early morning . The broken column in the foreground provides a nice leading line to the temple. Well composed.   Posted: 05/11/2024 09:19:30

Wasn't Hercules Greek?   Posted: 05/19/2024 09:43:03

David, your photo is lovely. We were in Amman many years ago but don't remember seeing this temple. The composition is lovely and your exposure spot on. The lighting on the columns and stones great.   Posted: 05/11/2024 10:36:15

This is a very appealing image and I am prompted to get out the CD of my photos from Jordan and Israel. This was a favorite trip that I did with Overseas Adventure Travel and I did many.
As always the lighting is perfect. Great job. Have you entered this in competitions?   Posted: 05/14/2024 22:26:23

Good composition and nice tones against a brilliant sky. Was this taken with a polarizer? Although I too often use one, I find it a bit much at top right.
P.S.: Hercules was probably just an earthquake.   Posted: 05/19/2024 09:46:58
