Aachen Historic City Hall by Judy Burr, APSA, MPSA

May 2024 - Aachen Historic City Hall

About the Image(s)

I took this with an Olympus EM5 and 12-50mm lens at 17mm=34mm with crop factor. SS was 1/2000, aperture was 5.6 and ISO was 320. We went to Germany after staying with friends in Belgium and Aachen was one of our first stops since we had not been there before. The cathedral is beautiful and I tooks lots of pictures there, but as we wandered the streets, I wanted to capture city scenes. I processed it in Elements with NIK and Topaz plugins.

Judy, I have never heard of Aachen, so I had to look it up as a result of your photograph. It looks like a very interesting city to visit. I like that you chose to frame this building by centering it, as the lines on the pavement and the trees on each side lead our eyes to the building. The two towers on either side, keep our eyes focused on the building in the center. The people on the right on the pavement help give the image scale. You captured a nice sky with the darkening clouds against a bright blue sky providing interest and contrast. The focus and exposure were very good. Very nice travel photograph.   Posted: 05/11/2024 09:39:31

Judy, I am missing seeing some of these beautiful historic buildings. Must be time to go to Europe. Well framed by the trees in front and sides. I like the people sitting and standing that add to the scale. Some of these buildings are hard to get the towers centered though. Wondered if it is possible to skew the image so that the left tower does not lean it as much. Other wise, lovely.   Posted: 05/11/2024 11:24:44

We drove through Aachen years ago but do not remember this building. It is impressive as are many city halls in Germany.   Posted: 05/14/2024 17:50:33

I saw quite a bit of Germany when I was in Europe in 1964 for three months but am sorry I haven't done much since then. This image is perfectly framed with the trees and the castle is very slightly off center which makes it interesting. The people sitting on the steps and walking are a plus. I'm trying to figure out what the pavement in front is. There are no cars but a few people. Maybe a plaza. The sky is beautiful!   Posted: 05/14/2024 22:58:29

Very nice leading lines to the City Hall. Although Aachen was not too far from where I lived and worked for 2 years, I've never been there. Agree about the leaning tower, although I didn't notice it at first.   Posted: 05/19/2024 13:10:58
