About the Image(s)

"Sarajevo has experienced war within the living memory of many of its citizens. Specifically the infamous Siege of Sarajevo in 1992 has left a trauma on the city, both visibly and in the psyche of its people. And as you would expect, most of the museums and points of interest are related, in some way, to this period of history. There are bullet holes strewn walls, war-related street art and murals, mortar shell holes filled with resin all over the roads and pavements.” Borrowed from online info. I found myself reading a lot articles about Bosnia.
I went to Bosnia with Overseas Adventure Travel some years ago and found the whole experience particularly interesting because of the history and seeing a place so different from any I had been. My trip: Crossroads of the Adriatic: Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Slovenia. The photo was taken from our modern hotel room outside of Sarajevo and the damaged buildings in front were the Senior Center. I particularly remember all the bullet holes on and damage to the library and of course, many, many buildings.

Esther, for me, your photograph does't tell the story that your description depicts. I see the dilapidated building in the foreground, but it is hard to tell if it is just old and abandoned or had been destroyed by shelling. Perhaps a closer photograph that would have shown some of the bullet holes would have better told the story.

Was this taken on very cloudy or hazy day, as the image is very flat and lifeless, but maybe you intended it that way to provide the sense of despair in the entire situation?   Posted: 09/13/2024 09:54:05

I doubt this would do well as a travel image. Perhaps an image with just the buildings in the foreground would hold greater interest.   Posted: 09/17/2024 02:27:20

I showed this to several family members who had spent time in Sarajevo and appreciated this photo because it shows the bombed buildings in the front and the newer houses behind. I do understand that without any information the image does not show travel. Being there has left an impression on me.   Posted: 09/18/2024 22:10:31

Esther I have several friends who may have put some of those bullet holes in the buildings, they too have returned home with an impression of Sarajevo. Your submission does show a cityscape, but unfortunately the conflict in 1992 left little to identify a significant landmark to identify Sarajevo apart from memories.   Posted: 09/23/2024 06:30:05

I never would have known this was Sarajevo from your image. I was there when it was Yugoslavia and was back in the area in 2013 and remember bullet holes in Bosnia and the new bridge in Mostar. I think this is more a memory shot for you and less of a PT image. We all need some memory shots too.   Posted: 09/23/2024 14:52:08

You are right about the memory shot. In fact, I know I have far more memory shots than travel shots for this group. I'm thinking about joining another group or just dropping out. I rarely take travel pictures that fit the narrow definition.
Thanks all, for pointing this out to me often!   Posted: 09/23/2024 15:16:56

Don't drop out, Esther; you've been with us for a long time and you do travel a lot. I enjoy seeing your photos and just wish I could travel like I used to, but life has interfered so I am using a lot of old images.   Posted: 09/23/2024 15:29:27

Oh Esther, please don't drop out. We so enjoy you and your comments in this group. I always enjoy your photos as well. I see some pics on line by you that sometimes would meet the PT definition.   Posted: 09/23/2024 17:13:05

Esther, I agree with the others. Whether or not your photos would qualify as PhotoTravel in a competition, I really enjoy what you have shown us. Many of your pics would qualify. Please stay in the group. It is a learning experience for all of us.   Posted: 09/30/2024 12:03:01
