About the Image(s)

Taken on the first day of my recent visit to Lisbon, Portugal - this location was "ringed in red" in my photo plans!
Standing at almost 200 feet high - I decided to submit this image that shows in detail Henry the Navigator and some of his fellow explorers.

David, we loved walking in that area when we were in downtown Lisbon a few years ago. That and the Jeronimos Monastery were some of our favorites along with Belem Tower. Very nicely done - nicely composed with very sharp detail and lovely blue skies in the background. Glad you included a photo of the entire monument which I took but for competition, it just doesn't work. The clarity of your photo is wonderful.   Posted: 11/05/2025 14:14:02

I was in Spain and Portugal for a month in October 2015. This is probably my favorite monument anywhere. Your image is perfect: it is sharp and I like the textures. The blue sky enhances this and I feel like I am viewing the Monument of Discoveries (or Age of Exploration) in person!   Posted: 11/11/2025 22:49:25

Portugal is on my list to visit, but so far we haven't made it. I love the detail of the monument, and is very sharp. Nice! I agree with Shirley, the way that you chose to display the monument works, but the larger monument doesn't. A travel photo that makes me want to go to Lisbon.   Posted: 11/24/2025 06:04:56

I might be alone here in preferring the original image (to me, it provides more context), but I agree that your tight crop does bring out the details in the figures that the original doesn't. However, I'd have preferred an angle that shows the face of the figure in front rather than just the side and back of his head.   Posted: 11/25/2025 12:32:19

Hi Sukumar, the leading figure on the monument (Henry the Navigator) is perched over the promenade - I would have needed a boat to get a full on photograph of him.   Posted: 11/25/2025 16:00:34

I also like the original but especially the view that you submitted. They are both so sharp! The way the statue is ''weathering'' really add to the appeal.   Posted: 11/30/2025 16:48:41

Very sharp with great detail. The blue sky really adds to the image. I agree with Sukumar that it doesn't provide context/location. It would be interesting to see what judges think, We never know:-)!   Posted: 11/30/2025 18:56:52
