November 2025 - Cham Dancer, Hemis festival, Ladakh
About the Image(s)
The masked Cham dance, performed as part of the annual Hemis Tsechu festival at the Hemis monastery, in Ladakh, India, in the Mahayana Tantric Buddhist tradition, celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. It is performed by monks in elaborate, multi-colored brocaded costumes, to the accompaniment of drums and a variety of indigenous musical instruments. Here I tried to isolate one dancer in the image, with just enough background for contrast.
