The Windmills of Consuegra, Spain by Tom Tauber, APSA, MPSA

October 2024 - The Windmills of Consuegra, Spain

About the Image(s)

While currently traveling by car in Spain from Malaga to Toledo, we got off the highway and stopped in the town of Consuegra to photograph the windmills. I had seen photographs of them before and was hoping for good light when we arrived in the late afternoon. It was touch and go, since rain showers were rolling through the area as we approached, but the clearing sky and the setting sun provided much better light than I had been hoping for. When the external lights on the windmills and the castle were switched on, I couldn’t believe my luck.

Consuegra is in the province of La Mancha, made famous by Miguel de Cervantes in his novel “Don Quixote.” For all we know, Cervantes had these windmills in mind when he made his hero attack them with his lance, deluded into thinking they were giants threatening him.

I've marveled at the algorithm Apple uses in capturing scenes of varied WB and exposure. Phones are getting so good they may just put real cameras out of business. This image illustrates it. You captured the colors of sunset on the clouds. Image is very well composed and interesting.   Posted: 10/03/2024 15:19:36

Tom, as they say when all the stars are aligned, you are blessed, which in fact happened. What a beautiful combination for ambient and artificial light, with the colors of the sky. The image is sharp with great DOF, and nicely composed. I see Don quijote in front of the first windmill, and other photographers, including one with a tripod.   Posted: 10/03/2024 17:38:13
