ORPHAN MONKS – KATHMANDU, NEPAL by Alan Lichtenstein

October 2024 - ORPHAN MONKS – KATHMANDU, NEPAL

About the Image(s)

As an initial matter, this image is ineligible for competition because it was posed for photography. That said, this is a study group, not a judging event, so your critical evaluation of both the aesthetic and technical aspects of the image is invited. At the conclusion of our trip to Nepal in 2013, we ventured out of our hotel using a back exit onto a back street typical of Kathmandu not generally frequented by tourists. We came to a structure with large steel gates that when we inquired, was told that it was a monastery that doubled as an orphanage. We were allowed entry, generally otherwise restricted and were given a cook’s tour, during which we saw and met orphan youngsters who were being trained as monks. These two orphans were posed for us in the image submitted.

Gear: Olympus E-5, Zuiko 18-180 mm lens opened to 33 mm
Data: ISO 200, f 5, 1/80 sec.

Alan, it is a nice and sharp image full of color. Just out of curiosity, if this was a "posed" image, what are thw persons in the background doing in the frame ?. Even being a posed situation, I like the face expression of both kids/young Monks.   Posted: 10/03/2024 17:31:28

Isaac, the people in the background were the adult monks who were supervising the children and posed them for us. I have since reviewed the guidelines and although the image is not suitable for PTD competition, there is no such prohibition for PID open color competition.   Posted: 10/04/2024 05:53:18

Alan, if I entered this in an open competition, I would crop it as shown. The two bright spots are distracting, but you want to zero in on the boys with no other distracting elements. I have a little trouble with the image. The boy on the left seems authentic, the one on the right seems a bit scared or startled at the direction that he should assume a praying position in front of strangers. The image seems contrived.   Posted: 10/12/2024 11:52:41

Tom, the image IS contrived, or at least somewhat so. My description says the image is ineligible for competition because it was posed for photography (see my comment to Isaac above). So your comment that the image is contrived is somewhat accurate. I just wanted everyone's opinion about the technical and aesthetic aspects of the image. Your suggestions about cropping are well taken. Not post-processing, I generally don't look at my images from the position of competition, but I do see that perhaps I should even if I don't enter them.   Posted: 10/12/2024 13:33:32

I agree with Tom that the cropping helps direction the focus on the children   Posted: 10/18/2024 17:00:47

Ed, if I ever enter this in competition in PID I'll take both your and Tom's advice and crop it.   Posted: 10/18/2024 19:22:12
