About the Image(s)

Shibuya Crossing

It is in the very center of Tokyo and next to the Shibuya station. The main image was taken from the south side of the crossing. It is one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in the world, and perhaps it is the most iconic symbol of the city of Tokyo. It has been estimated that over 2.4 million people cross Shibuya every day. With its large advertising screens and heavy foot traffic, it is often compared to the Times Square intersection in New York City and Piccadilly circus in London, and it is seen as representative of the ultra-modern image of Tokyo. One of the moat popular spots to watch this flood of pedestrian’s is from the second story of the Starbucks cafĂ© located in the north side of the crossing and seen in Original. There is always a line of people to get in.
The image was created using a Nikon D5 with the Nikkor lens 24-70 mm f/2.8 @ 40 mm and these settings: ISO 4000, f/8 and 1/30 sec. The image was PP in LightRoom, Denoise applied, and cropped.

I visited that very spot, but during the day. There were so many people walking all over the place even the crosswalks weren't clear. But your image, taken at night shows the hustle and bustle of the site. Death of field is very good, and your image is sharp. The entire frame adds to the business of the site, and I must say you were very lucky to get the street in front of the crosswalk devoid of cars (I wasn't), but your original, taken likely from another vantage point, shows the dispersement of the crowd over the entire area. Knowing this site, I like your image. I should have come back at night to create an image. It looks far better at night than during the day.   Posted: 02/01/2025 05:58:48

I like the "Original" even better because it shows this scene as more chaotic and the lines are more dynamic, compared to the more static straight image. I have seen this image before - did you enter it previously? Maybe it was a similar image by someone else.   Posted: 02/02/2025 17:44:51

Tom, I did some walking from one end to the other. I have never used this image before.   Posted: 02/08/2025 15:24:21

Dr. What an iconic night view of the Shibuya. I PP with a blending mode of soft light, which eliminates some of the haze. Are you hand-holding?   Posted: 02/02/2025 23:00:51

Lovely shot of such a unique street spot. I loved the elevated angle of view, the most.

But I thought, cropping f/g by one inch & adding contrast can make the image more interesting. Pardon me, if you disagree   Posted: 02/06/2025 03:54:21

Vinaya, I do not have to agree. This is the beauty of the image discussion groups. There is more than one way...   Posted: 02/08/2025 15:20:56
