April 2026 - Santa Justa Elevator

About the Image(s)

This structure is located in the historic center of Lisbon, in the Baixa district. it is/was a public elevator built in the early 1900 to connect two parts of the city at different elevations: Baixa (downtown) below and Chiado/Bairro Alto Above. In Portuguese is called Elevador de Santa Justa. Lisbon is very hilly, so this was a practical transportation solution. It is about 45 meters (148 ft) tall. Was designed in a neo-Gothic iron style, inspired by the Eiffel Tower (the engineer studied under Eiffel). It is a major tourist attraction with a panoramic viewinf platform. It stands out because it is an ornate industrial-era iron structure squeezed between traditional stone buildings, almost as a "vertical bridge". The narrow street frames the structure and emphasizes the height of the elevator.
The image was created with a Nikon D300 with the Nikkor zoom lens 18-200 mm @ 36 mm (54 mm in 35 mm) and these settings: ISO 200, f/9 and 1/320 sec. The image was PP in LightRoom. No crop was done.

You need to get as lucky as Tom and get the scene with no tourists. Regardless, it's a good image, well composed in consideration of the narrow street. Nice image.   Posted: 04/03/2026 14:56:13
