The Windmills of Consuegra, Spain by Tom Tauber, APSA, MPSA

October 2024 - The Windmills of Consuegra, Spain

About the Image(s)

While currently traveling by car in Spain from Malaga to Toledo, we got off the highway and stopped in the town of Consuegra to photograph the windmills. I had seen photographs of them before and was hoping for good light when we arrived in the late afternoon. It was touch and go, since rain showers were rolling through the area as we approached, but the clearing sky and the setting sun provided much better light than I had been hoping for. When the external lights on the windmills and the castle were switched on, I couldn’t believe my luck.

Consuegra is in the province of La Mancha, made famous by Miguel de Cervantes in his novel “Don Quixote.” For all we know, Cervantes had these windmills in mind when he made his hero attack them with his lance, deluded into thinking they were giants threatening him.

You were lucky indeed! So much positive in this photo, from the lighting to the composition, where both the fence and the windmills draw you into the rest of the scene. The people give a sense of perspective. Just one car...another stroke of luck I would assume.   Posted: 10/12/2024 11:57:45
