Ethiopian priest in Lalibela rock church.  by Laurie Bergner

October 2024 - Ethiopian priest in Lalibela rock church.

About the Image(s)

When I visited the famous Lalibela rock churches, they all had priests in them, and they also had the traditional Ethiopian religious art. I can't say those priests were particularly friendly - this one sure doesn't look welcoming, does he? But people are allowed to visit without a problem. I liked the juxtaposition of the priest with the beautiful art.

Taken with my old Canon EOS Rebel. ISO 6400, 31 mm, f/4.0, 1/40 sec

He looks unwelcoming and irritated. Or maybe bored. A fascinating capture. The artwork is such a contrast with his weird expression. Nice candid work.   Posted: 10/12/2024 11:54:39

These priests may not look welcoming but they depend on the tips the photographers give them. As the tourists walk through the dimly lit churches, the priests stand at the exit with their hands open. The priest I photographed had sunglasses on despite the low light because the tourists would taker a flash picture of him and blind him. Maybe tourism has gotten to them, wouldn't blame them   Posted: 10/12/2024 12:19:28

Ethiopia is an exciting place to visit, and there are many opportunities to take pictures, as you did. However, they ask for donations after you take their pictures at their rock churches.
