About the Image(s)

Title : Papakōlea Beach (also known as Green Sand Beach or Mahana Beach) in the Kaʻū district of Hawaii's Big Island .

Technical: f10, 1/100, 24mm, Metering : Center Weighted Average , ISO 90

Background:

This is a rare, unique destination famous for its green-olivine crystal sand. Located near South Point, this beach requires a 2.5-mile, one-way hike (roughly 5 miles roundtrip) across rugged, shadeless terrain. It is totally worth it .

The Four Green Sand Beaches:

1 Papakōlea Beach (Hawaii, USA): Also known as Mahana Beach, located on the Big Island.

2 Talofofo Beach (Guam): Situated in Talofofo Bay.

3. Punta Cormorant (Floreana Island, Galapagos): Located on the northern coast.

4. Hornindalsvatnet (Norway): Situated by Europe's deepest lake.

These locations are recognized as geological wonders, formed by specific, long-term erosion of volcanic cones or lava flows rich in iron-magnesium silicate

This is really interesting, I have never heard of a beach with olive green sand before. The fact that there are only four in the world makes the scene quite distinctive.

I am looking at the rocks on the left and see a slight halo around them, as if the photo were sharpened too much.   Posted: 03/06/2026 17:20:14
