About the Image(s)

This is a detail of the remarkable Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis
in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. The monument is about 5000 years old - older than Stonehenge.
The purpose is not known, maybe it was a ritual or ceremonial place or an astronomical
Observatory. The landscape is quite dramatic - the site overlooks lochs, the sea, and
is in remote part of the island. The Monument consists of a stone circle
with radiating stone rows forming a cross-shaped pattern.
The image I chose shows the central group of stones
within the context of the nature and farmland around it.
